Small Towns
In here its always dusty
You walk out on a Monday and
Come back in with Friday’s dust
Sticking to your jeans in small sweat
Covered spots. But you grow
Used to it.
Just remember,
Small towns are always
Dusty.
The buildings and the people are
Stuck somewhere between
1931, 1971, 1951 or 1941,
But never 1961.
You won’t find
Any longhairs here.
There’s a movie theatre that went out
Of business long before The last
Picture show could play to a
Crowded audience of velvet seats.
The marquis advertises
Free popcorn with admission.
Children playing baseball
In the streets where cars rarely
Tread never seem to grow
Old, but fade along with
The seasons.
Main street lasts one block
And if you turn too quickly
You’ll be lost
Among a forest of stalks.
But you won’t.
Because in small towns
Time always moves slower,
Convincing you that there is always
More hours to spend.
But the price is high.
You were only going to stay for
A year, but in smalls towns
You stay for life.
